Success Stories...

We know that families caring for someone on the autism spectrum face a unique set of challenges. Developmental milestones like eating, making friends, and potty training can be difficult for any child, and children with autism struggle more than most.

But there’s good news — GBC Autism Services has a proven track record. We have countless success stories to share from our years of serving children and families dealing with autism. Here are just a few:

We help children

communicate:

  • We’ve helped countless kids make connections through our social skills groups that have blossomed into playdates and friendships.

  • We helped a 4-year-old child, who would engage in self-injurious behaviors, communicate their requests more safely. Our incredible team taught him how to properly ask for food, request a break, and go to the bathroom by using picture cards. Through data collected during therapy, we were able to see that using the picture cards as a safer form of communication decreased his self-injurious behavior.

We help keep children

safe:

  • Our team succeeded at helping a child who was biting and mouthing things (including things that were not sanitary). We gave them safer ways to meet their sensory needs such as using discrete chew jewelry instead of biting others or chewing on unsanitary objects on the playground.

We teach children to be

independent:

  • We taught a child how to eat independently so they could join their peers at lunch.

  • We helped a teenager increase their independence so they could successfully transition to a day program after high school. This included working on activities of daily living (such as eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring, and continence), and building key communication and social skills so they could independently navigate their environments.
  • We worked with a child to increase their tolerance for foods so they could consume a larger variety of healthier foods.

We help foster

healthy family relationships:

  • We helped a child learn to appropriately ask for personal space and breaks instead of hitting or biting, which helped build better relationships with their siblings.

  • We began services for a family, and within the first 2-3 weeks, they were already seeing progress with their children! The family saw more meaningful interactions between siblings — the older sibling even began imitating adults to try and get the younger sibling to talk. The family also saw an increase in vocal communication from the younger sibling, which had previously been very inconsistent. ABA can be a huge commitment for families, but within a few short weeks, this family had seen many gains and they were excited to continue with services and see what other progress they could achieve.

We help parents with

potty-training:

  • A child began services wearing Pull-Ups and within the first month, she started wearing underwear and independently requested to use the bathroom in the clinic. Her mom has worked collaboratively with us, and the child is also able to wear underwear at home and remain dry.

  • Alongside an entire family, our team worked to teach a 5-year-old to request to use the bathroom before accidents happened. It was a potty-training success! After just a couple of weeks, he now makes requests for bathroom breaks with different people and in new environments. Accidents are a thing of the past!

We can even work with you

during a pandemic:

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in parent involvement and participation in therapy appointments via telehealth as well as participation during in-home therapy. This has greatly benefited clients and caregivers alike and has created positive changes in client outcomes. Skill generalization is occurring across all skill areas and age ranges! This has been a stressful time for parents, clients, and staff, but it has also shown how adaptable and determined our staff and the families we serve are at transforming lives!
When you’re ready to talk, we are ready to listen.
