A Typical Day for an ABA Therapy Behavior Technician

January 17, 2023 GBC admin

If you’re considering a career in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy, you may be wondering what a typical day looks like for a behavior technician who is working with kids on the autism spectrum.

What Is ABA Therapy?

First, a definition of ABA: ABA is a research-based approach that involves breaking down skills into small, manageable steps and reinforcing positive behaviors through rewards. As a behavior technician at GBC, you will use ABA principles to help children with autism learn new skills, reduce challenging behaviors, and enhance traits that set them apart from others. Behavior Technicians (BT) at GBC usually work one-on-one with patients in their homes under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, but some instruction may take place in a clinic or classroom, too. (In addition to in-home and clinic-based services, GBC also provides school consultation services and a social skills group.) The BT implements structured programs to help their patients develop new skills in daily living, academics, and social interactions.

The Typical Day of a Behavior Technician

Of course, no two days are exactly the same as a behavior technician, but there are routines and protocols to follow when working with kids on the spectrum, especially since regular routines and predictable schedules are often comforting to children. The day-to-day depends on the age and needs of the children you’re working with, but you’ll always strive to provide fun and nurturing one-on-one instruction to help the child achieve their goals, whether that’s forming a sentence, tying a shoe, or role-playing in a social situation. You will be assigned one to two patients, and you will work with your patient’s caregivers, along with your mentors to implement a structured program that will reduce negative behaviors and teach new social and communication skills.

You’ll collect data during your sessions using a data collection app to keep track of your patient’s progress and milestones. You’ll spend a minimum of six months with each patient, helping them achieve their prescribed goals, and you’ll meet with your BCBA supervisor regularly to discuss your patients’ cases.

Opportunities and Flexibility with ABA Therapy

Something great about working in ABA therapy is that it can be part-time employment, which is perfect for those who want to have a flexible schedule. It’s also a great option for people who are looking to get their feet wet in the field before committing to a full-time career. GBC provides training to earn a professional certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), as well as ongoing opportunities for development.

Of course, working with kids on the spectrum can be challenging at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing like knowing that you’ve made a difference in the life of a child with autism and their family as well. Good behavior technicians demonstrate patience, resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Having a set plan is essential, but so is the flexibility to adapt and readjust as you move through a lesson to take into account a child’s needs, mood, and circumstances at that moment. The old adage “two steps forward, one step back” applies in many of these situations. This is important to remember with children in general, but particularly for children on the spectrum; progress is not a straight line. That’s why patience with yourself and the children you’re working with is so important.
